Check out these enormous, mossy bracket fungi or "conks" (perhaps the red-banded polypore - Fomitopsis mounceae, or the artists conk - Ganoderma applonatum), some of the largest I've ever come across, growing on an ancient Sitka spruce snag in the old-growth temperate rainforest of near Port Renfrew in Pacheedaht territory.

The original specimen was isolated from Edson, Alberta on a poplar tree. This species was named after Irene Mounce, a respected Canadian mycologist. Fomitopsis species have fruit bodies that are mostly perennial, with forms ranging from sessile to effused-reflexed (partially crust-like and partially pileate). Fruit body texture is typically tough to woody, and the pore surface is white to tan or pinkish-colored with mostly small and regular pores. Fomitopsis mounceae Note: Fomitopsis ochracea resembles F. mounceae in basic form and appearance but never has the reddish marginal band. Additional comments about F. ochracea are included on the F. mounceae page.
