The Conflict Perspective assumes social behavior is understood in terms of conflict or tension between competing groups over power or the allocation of resources, including housing, money, access to services, and political representation.

Conflict Theory, developed by Karl Marx, purports that due to society’s never-ending competition for finite resources, it will always be in a state of conflict. The implication of this theory is that those in possession of wealth and resources will protect and hoard those resources, while those without will do whatever they can to obtain them. Conflict theory, originally imagined by Karl Marx, is the idea that all of society is in constant conflict due to a lack of resources. Marx thought that the established social order only works because those in power can hold resources as a way to keep those with limited resources performing as they wish. Conflict theory, in short, was the theory which showed everybody how the difference in rights and power in different groups can lead to conflicts and tension among the various groups of people. The power and rights worked as the key factors in determining a person’s position in society.
